What’s on my mind

It’s All About Connections
Charles Eames, the iconic architect and furniture designer, is best remembered perhaps for his beautiful chairs. He created several iconic designs that went on to shape (literally) a generation of industrial design and continue to influence designers today. Perhaps more than any other creator, Eames represents to me what it means to BE a designer.

Iteration is the Only Way to Design
There is a strong temptation when creating anything to try to create the best thing possible: to imbue your creation with every last feature or embellishment that you can think of and then polish it within an inch of its life. And then, once you have created your Perfect Thing, you release it to the world to universal acclaim and unrivalled success, right?

Designing an Experience (Not Just a Series of Interfaces)
It sounds kind of pretentious, doesn’t it? Designing an experience. But it’s the best way to describe what we are actually trying to do, I think. A smart person once said to me that the experience is not on the screen, it’s in the mind. And I think that’s a great way to think about user experience and product design.

Be The Interface
An experience, in the context of digital business, can be defined as the totality of visual, intellectual or other inputs that a user encounters through a digital platform or device, in relation to a product or service. Experience design, therefore, is the effort to...

Lean UX – First Principles
A presentation that I created and gave at Shaw Media to help explain Lean UX concepts and foundations to the wider Online Experience Team. The presentation is in PowerPoint format, but is rather weighty due to the graphics. Lean UC Concepts Presentation (PDF)

Make Good Worlds
Just a quick thought here: remember that what we do is to create new spaces for people to explore, new digital worlds for people to exist in. Remember that these are imaginary spaces that we can shape in any way we choose, but that the decisions we make in this regard...

Lean UX – Why and How
"Phase 2 is the biggest lie in software development." That's the opening line of Josh Seiden's 2013 book Lean UX. And if you've spent more than ten minutes in the web and software business, you know the truth of that statement. So often, UX designers work hard to...

Design Perfection
A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. Antoine de Saint-Exupery

iBooks and The Best User Interface Ever
I have long maintained (with more than a hint of irony) that "The Best User Interface Ever Invented" is the book. That's right, just the humble book. To be clear, I am not referring to The Book (or any Book that might be considered of religious significance). I just...
